Investors Don't See Light At End Of NETGEAR, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NTGR) Tunnel And Push Stock Down 26%
NETGEAR, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTGR) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 26% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
Following the heavy fall in price, NETGEAR may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, since almost half of all companies in the Communications industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.9x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does NETGEAR's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, NETGEAR has been relatively sluggish. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as NETGEAR's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 2.9% gain to the company's revenues. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with revenue shrinking 25% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 1.3% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 15%, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that NETGEAR's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
The southerly movements of NETGEAR's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of NETGEAR's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
