The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Rimini Street, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:RMNI) Earnings Yet As Shares Tumble 30%
Rimini Street, Inc. (NASDAQ:RMNI) shares have had a horrible month, losing 30% after a relatively good period beforehand. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 17% in that time.
After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may consider Rimini Street as an attractive investment with its 11.4x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Rimini Street has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Rimini Street's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 280%. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 0.2% during the coming year according to the four analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 14% growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Rimini Street's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Key Takeaway
The softening of Rimini Street's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Rimini Street's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
