MKS (NASDAQ:MKSI) shareholders have endured a 34% loss from investing in the stock a year ago
The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. When you buy individual stocks, you can make higher profits, but you also face the risk of under-performance. Investors in MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 35%. That's well below the market return of 13%. Even if you look out three years, the returns are still disappointing, with the share price down33% in that time. On the other hand, we note it's up 8.4% in about a month. But this could be related to good market conditions, with stocks up around 4.0% during the period.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
MKS managed to increase earnings per share from a loss to a profit, over the last 12 months.
We're surprised that the share price is lower given that improvement. If the company can sustain the earnings growth, this might be an inflection point for the business, which would make right now a really interesting time to study it more closely.

A Different Perspective
MKS shareholders are down 34% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 5% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand MKS better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with MKS (including 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) .
