TJX Companies (NYSE:TJX) Could Become A Multi-Bagger
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. With that in mind, the ROCE of TJX Companies (NYSE:TJX) looks great, so lets see what the trend can tell us.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for TJX Companies:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.30 = US$6.3b ÷ (US$32b - US$11b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to May 2025).
Therefore, TJX Companies has an ROCE of 30%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 13% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Can We Tell From TJX Companies' ROCE Trend?
TJX Companies' ROCE growth is quite impressive. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 188% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 34% of its operations, which isn't ideal. It's worth keeping an eye on this because as the percentage of current liabilities to total assets increases, some aspects of risk also increase.
What We Can Learn From TJX Companies' ROCE
To bring it all together, TJX Companies has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if TJX Companies can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
