Burlington Stores Insiders Sell US$2.6m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Many Burlington Stores, Inc. (NYSE:BURL) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Burlington Stores

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Group President & Chief Merchandising Officer, Jennifer Vecchio, for US$1.2m worth of shares, at about US$244 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$253. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 10% of Jennifer Vecchio's holding.

Insiders in Burlington Stores didn't buy any shares in the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership

Burlington Stores insiders own about US$60m worth of shares. That equates to 0.4% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
