Further weakness as Sportsman's Warehouse Holdings (NASDAQ:SPWH) drops 12% this week, taking five-year losses to 80%
Sportsman's Warehouse Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPWH) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 98% in the last quarter. But will that repair the damage for the weary investors who have owned this stock as it declined over half a decade? Probably not. In fact, the share price has tumbled down a mountain to land 80% lower after that period. So we don't gain too much confidence from the recent recovery. The real question is whether the business can leave its past behind and improve itself over the years ahead. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.
With the stock having lost 12% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.
Because Sportsman's Warehouse Holdings made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last five years Sportsman's Warehouse Holdings saw its revenue shrink by 1.3% per year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. The share price fall of 12% (per year, over five years) is a stern reminder that money-losing companies are expected to grow revenue. It takes a certain kind of mental fortitude (or recklessness) to buy shares in a company that loses money and doesn't grow revenue. Fear of becoming a 'bagholder' may be keeping people away from this stock.

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Sportsman's Warehouse Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 29% over one year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 12% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Sportsman's Warehouse Holdings (1 is a bit concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
