Despite the fact that Qurate Retail, Inc. (NASDAQ:QRTE.A) stock rose 5.2% last week, insiders who sold US$16m worth of stock in the previous 12 months are likely to be better off. Holding on to stock would have meant their investment would be worth less now than it was at the time of sale. Thus selling at an average price of US$13.62, which is higher than the current price, may have been the best decision.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Qurate Retail Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Director, John Malone, sold US$12m worth of shares at a price of US$13.68 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$3.84. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership of Qurate Retail

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Qurate Retail insiders own about US$156m worth of shares (which is 11% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
