Possible Bearish Signals With Academy Sports and Outdoors Insiders Disposing Stock

Many Academy Sports and Outdoors, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASO) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Academy Sports and Outdoors

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Samuel Johnson, for US$3.0m worth of shares, at about US$50.76 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$55.95). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 44% of Samuel Johnson's stake.
