Thermo Fisher pumps $76M to expand manufacturing site in NY serving vaccine/drug materials
Thermo Fisher Scientific (NYSE:TMO) is investing $76M to expand its dry powder media manufacturing facility in Grand Island, New York to meet global demand for cell culture media, which is used in making new vaccines and biologics. The company said in an Aug. 4 press release that the expansion is part of its $650M multi-year investment, announced last year, to ensure a scalable bioprocessing production capacity for important medicines, including COVID-19 vaccines. "Our expanded Grand Island site represents a significant milestone in our investment to double our total manufacturing capacity by the end of 2023,” said Kate Torchilin, president, biologicals and chemicals, TMO. The expansion will add an estimated 100 team members across roles at the Grand Island site, which currently employs more than 1,600 people. The company employs over 3,000 people across New York. Thermo Fisher noted that the site will add more than 45K square feet of Animal Origin Free (AOF) manufacturing space. This includes manufacturing of the company's Advanced Granulation Technology format and other AOF Dry Powder Media products.
