We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we’d be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell Wave Life Sciences Ltd. (NASDAQ:WVE), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Selling?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that ‘insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.’

Wave Life Sciences Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Director, Gregory Verdine, sold US$583k worth of shares at a price of US$39.52 per share. We generally don’t like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$24.08). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. Gregory Verdine was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.
