We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in PTC Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTCT).

What Is Insider Selling?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Chairman of the Board Michael Schmertzler bought US$325k worth of shares at a price of US$32.48 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$65.05. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.
