The Prothena Corporation plc (NASDAQ:PRTA) Analysts Have Been Trimming Their Sales Forecasts
One thing we could say about the analysts on Prothena Corporation plc (NASDAQ:PRTA) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Revenue estimates were cut sharply as analysts signalled a weaker outlook - perhaps a sign that investors should temper their expectations as well.
After the downgrade, the consensus from Prothena's nine analysts is for revenues of US$34m in 2025, which would reflect a substantial 75% decline in sales compared to the last year of performance. Per-share losses are expected to explode, reaching US$3.68 per share. Yet prior to the latest estimates, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$47m and losses of US$3.57 per share in 2025. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.
Check out our latest analysis for Prothena
The consensus price target fell 50% to US$24.29, with the analysts clearly concerned about the company following the weaker revenue and earnings outlook.
Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 84% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2025. That is a notable change from historical growth of 27% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 17% per year. It's pretty clear that Prothena's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Prothena's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. The consensus price target fell measurably, with analysts seemingly not reassured by recent business developments, leading to a lower estimate of Prothena's future valuation. Overall, given the drastic downgrade to this year's forecasts, we'd be feeling a little more wary of Prothena going forwards.
With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Prothena going out to 2027, and you can see them free on our platform here.
