The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. To wit, the MannKind Corporation (NASDAQ:MNKD) share price has flown 133% in the last three years. That sort of return is as solid as granite. But it's down 5.3% in the last week. However, this might be related to the overall market decline of 2.5% in a week.

Although MannKind has shed US$62m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

See our latest analysis for MannKind

Given that MannKind didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over the last three years MannKind has grown its revenue at 36% annually. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Along the way, the share price gained 33% per year, a solid pop by our standards. This suggests the market has recognized the progress the business has made, at least to a significant degree. Nonetheless, we'd say MannKind is still worth investigating - successful businesses can often keep growing for long periods.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective

It's good to see that MannKind has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 124% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 9% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for MannKind (1 is a bit unpleasant) that you should be aware of.
