Investors might be losing patience for Liquidia's (NASDAQ:LQDA) increasing losses, as stock sheds 20% over the past week

Liquidia Corporation (NASDAQ:LQDA) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 20% in the last week. But that doesn't undermine the rather lovely longer-term return, if you measure over the last three years. In three years the stock price has launched 196% higher: a great result. So the recent fall in the share price should be viewed in that context. If the business can perform well for years to come, then the recent drop could be an opportunity.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 20%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

Liquidia wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Liquidia's revenue trended up 1.1% each year over three years. Considering the company is losing money, we think that rate of revenue growth is uninspiring. In comparison, the share price rise of 44% per year over the last three years is pretty impressive. Shareholders should be pretty happy with that, although interested investors might want to examine the financial data more closely to see if the gains are really justified. It seems likely that the market is pretty optimistic about Liquidia, given it is losing money.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on Liquidia

A Different Perspective

Liquidia shareholders gained a total return of 6.1% during the year. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 11% a year, over half a decade) look better. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. Investors who like to make money usually check up on insider purchases, such as the price paid, and total amount bought.
