Here's Why We're A Bit Worried About Inovio Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ:INO) Cash Burn Situation

We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.

So should Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:INO) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

When Might Inovio Pharmaceuticals Run Out Of Money?

A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. In March 2025, Inovio Pharmaceuticals had US$68m in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was US$103m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of around 8 months as of March 2025. Importantly, analysts think that Inovio Pharmaceuticals will reach cashflow breakeven in 3 years. That means unless the company reduces its cash burn quickly, it may well look to raise more cash. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Is Inovio Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

In our view, Inovio Pharmaceuticals doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just US$283k in the last twelve months. As a result, we think it's a bit early to focus on the revenue growth, so we'll limit ourselves to looking at how the cash burn is changing over time. It's possible that the 12% reduction in cash burn over the last year is evidence of management tightening their belts as cash reserves deplete. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

How Easily Can Inovio Pharmaceuticals Raise Cash?

Even though it has reduced its cash burn recently, shareholders should still consider how easy it would be for Inovio Pharmaceuticals to raise more cash in the future. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Inovio Pharmaceuticals has a market capitalisation of US$76m and burnt through US$103m last year, which is 136% of the company's market value. Given just how high that expenditure is, relative to the company's market value, we think there's an elevated risk of funding distress, and we would be very nervous about holding the stock.

Is Inovio Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're rather concerned about Inovio Pharmaceuticals' cash burn. Take, for example, its cash burn relative to its market cap, which suggests the company may have difficulty funding itself, in the future. While not as bad as its cash burn relative to its market cap, its cash burn reduction is also a concern, and considering everything mentioned above, we're struggling to find much to be optimistic about. Shareholders can take heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven. After considering the data discussed in this article, we don't have a lot of confidence that its cash burn rate is prudent, as it seems like it might need more cash soon.
