In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. We regret to report that long term Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMPH) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 13% in three years, versus a market return of about 76%. And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 7.6%.

With the stock having lost 7.6% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Amphastar Pharmaceuticals became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.

Revenue is actually up 11% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating Amphastar Pharmaceuticals further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Amphastar Pharmaceuticals provided a TSR of 9.7% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 1.2% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. If you would like to research Amphastar Pharmaceuticals in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
