Discounted Cash Flow Calculation for NasdaqGS:VIAB using 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity Model

The calculations below outline how an intrinsic value for Viacom is arrived at by discounting future cash flows to their present value using the 2 stage method. We try to start with analysts estimates of free cash flow, however if these are not available we use the most recent financial results. In the 1st stage we continue to grow the free cash flow over a 10 year period, with the growth rate trending towards the perpetual growth rate used in the 2nd stage. The 2nd stage assumes the company grows at a stable rate into perpetuity.

Note: Free cash flow to equity valuations ignore the company's cash or debt.

  • Viacom used its assets more efficiently than the US Entertainment industry average last year based on Return on Assets.

VIAB Health

How is Viacom's financial health and their level of debt?

A company's financial position is much like your own financial position, it includes everything you own (assets) and owe (liabilities).

The boxes below represent the relative size of what makes up Viacom's finances.

The net worth of a company is the difference between its assets and liabilities.
Net Worth
  • Viacom is able to meet its short term (1 year) commitments with its holdings of cash and other short term assets.
  • Viacom's long term commitments exceed its cash and other short term assets.
Balance sheet
This treemap shows a more detailed breakdown of Viacom's finances. If any of them are yellow this indicates they may be out of proportion and red means they relate to one of the checks below.
Assets
Liabilities and shares
The 'shares' portion represents any funds contributed by the owners (shareholders) and any profits.
  • Low level of unsold assets.
  • Debt is not covered by short term assets, assets are 0.6x debt.
Historical Debt
Nearly all companies have debt. Debt in itself isn’t bad, however if the debt is too high, or the company can’t afford to pay the interest on its debts this may have impacts in the future.

The graphic below shows equity (available funds) and debt, we ideally want to see the red area (debt) decreasing.

If there is any debt we look at the companies capability to repay it, and whether the level has increased over the past 5 years.

Is Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB) A Smart Pick For Income Investors?

This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously. … Conclusion When we look at a dividend stock, we need to form a judgement on whether the dividend will grow, if the company is able to maintain it in a wide range of economic circumstances, and if the dividend payout is sustainable. … Unfortunately, the company has not been able to generate earnings per share growth, and cut its dividend at least once in the past.

Should You Like Viacom Inc.’s (NASDAQ:VIAB) High Return On Capital Employed?

Specifically, we're going to calculate its Return On Capital Employed (ROCE), in the hopes of getting some insight into the business. … Analysts use this formula to calculate return on capital employed: Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities) Or for Viacom: 0.15 = US$2.8b ÷ (US$23b - US$3.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2019.) Therefore, Viacom has an ROCE of 15%. … Due to the way ROCE is calculated, a high level of current liabilities makes a company look as though it has less capital employed, and thus can (sometimes unfairly) boost the ROCE.

Is It Time To Consider Buying Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAB)?

This is because Viacom’s beta (a measure of share price volatility) is high, meaning its price movements will be exaggerated relative to the rest of the market. … Although value investors would argue that it’s the intrinsic value relative to the price that matter the most, a more compelling investment thesis would be high growth potential at a cheap price. … If you are no longer interested in Viacom, you can use our free platform to see my list of over 50 other stocks with a high growth potential.

Did Changing Sentiment Drive Viacom's (NASDAQ:VIAB) Share Price Down A Worrying 66%?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. … We note that for Viacom the TSR over the last 5 years was -62%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. … Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 17% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance.
