Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Playtika Holding Corp.'s (NASDAQ:PLTK) Earnings Despite 25% Price Jump
Playtika Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:PLTK) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. But the last month did very little to improve the 50% share price decline over the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Playtika Holding's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in the United States, where the median P/E ratio is around 18x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
Playtika Holding hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn around. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Is There Some Growth For Playtika Holding?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Playtika Holding's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 60%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 67% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 41% per year during the coming three years according to the twelve analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's curious that Playtika Holding's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Playtika Holding appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump getting its P/E back in line with most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Playtika Holding's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 5 warning signs for Playtika Holding (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you need to be mindful of.
