Does Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Activision Blizzard Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Over the last three years, Activision Blizzard has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a falcon taking flight, Activision Blizzard's EPS soared from US$2.36 to US$3.35, over the last year. That's a commendable gain of 42%.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that Activision Blizzard is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 5.4 percentage points to 36%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Activision Blizzard Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$59b company like Activision Blizzard. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$415m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
Does Activision Blizzard Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
You can't deny that Activision Blizzard has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. Of course, identifying quality businesses is only half the battle; investors need to know whether the stock is undervalued.
