Investing in Markel Group (NYSE:MKL) five years ago would have delivered you a 123% gain
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. One great example is Markel Group Inc. (NYSE:MKL) which saw its share price drive 123% higher over five years.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last half decade, Markel Group became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. Indeed, the Markel Group share price has gained 54% in three years. In the same period, EPS is up 2.6% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 15% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).
We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of Markel Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Markel Group has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 26% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 17%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Markel Group you should know about.
