What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at Nu Skin Enterprises' (NYSE:NUS) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Nu Skin Enterprises, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.18 = US$258m ÷ (US$2.0b - US$543m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).

So, Nu Skin Enterprises has an ROCE of 18%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 12% generated by the Personal Products industry.

How Are Returns Trending?

While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has employed 29% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 18%. Since 18% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.

The Bottom Line On Nu Skin Enterprises' ROCE

To sum it up, Nu Skin Enterprises has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 55% to shareholders over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
