Those who invested in BellRing Brands (NYSE:BRBR) five years ago are up 217%
It hasn't been the best quarter for BellRing Brands, Inc. (NYSE:BRBR) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 11% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. It's fair to say most would be happy with 217% the gain in that time. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.
So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over half a decade, BellRing Brands managed to grow its earnings per share at 54% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 26% over the same period. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
It is of course excellent to see how BellRing Brands has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. If you are thinking of buying or selling BellRing Brands stock, you should check out this FREE detailed report on its balance sheet.

A Different Perspective
BellRing Brands shareholders are up 6.3% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 26% over five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
