LifeVantage (NASDAQ:LFVN) Will Be Hoping To Turn Its Returns On Capital Around
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Having said that, from a first glance at LifeVantage (NASDAQ:LFVN) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for LifeVantage:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.16 = US$6.2m ÷ (US$61m - US$22m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
So, LifeVantage has an ROCE of 16%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Personal Products industry average of 14%.

In the above chart we have measured LifeVantage's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free analyst report for LifeVantage .
What Can We Tell From LifeVantage's ROCE Trend?
In terms of LifeVantage's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 36%, but since then they've fallen to 16%. However it looks like LifeVantage might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
The Bottom Line On LifeVantage's ROCE
In summary, LifeVantage is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Unsurprisingly, the stock has only gained 17% over the last five years, which potentially indicates that investors are accounting for this going forward. Therefore, if you're looking for a multi-bagger, we'd propose looking at other options.
On a final note, we've found 1 warning sign for LifeVantage that we think you should be aware of.
