Investors in QuidelOrtho (NASDAQ:QDEL) from five years ago are still down 88%, even after 3.8% gain this past week
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the QuidelOrtho Corporation (NASDAQ:QDEL) share price has gained 14% in the last three months. But will that heal all the wounds inflicted over 5 years of declines? Unlikely. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 88% in that time. The recent bounce might mean the long decline is over, but we are not confident. The million dollar question is whether the company can justify a long term recovery. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
While the stock has risen 3.8% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.
QuidelOrtho wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
Over five years, QuidelOrtho grew its revenue at 19% per year. That's better than most loss-making companies. So on the face of it we're really surprised to see the share price has averaged a fall of 14% each year, in the same time period. It could be that the stock was over-hyped before. We'd recommend carefully checking for indications of future growth - and balance sheet threats - before considering a purchase.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think QuidelOrtho will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).
A Different Perspective
Investors in QuidelOrtho had a tough year, with a total loss of 4.5%, against a market gain of about 13%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 14% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand QuidelOrtho better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for QuidelOrtho you should be aware of, and 1 of them can't be ignored.
