Biodesix, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:BDSX) Shares Leap 27% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story
Biodesix, Inc. (NASDAQ:BDSX) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 71% share price drop in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, considering around half the companies operating in the United States' Healthcare industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.3x, you may still consider Biodesix as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.8x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Biodesix's Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times have been advantageous for Biodesix as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Biodesix's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 22% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 124% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 19% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 5.7% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it odd that Biodesix is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What Does Biodesix's P/S Mean For Investors?
Despite Biodesix's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Biodesix's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
