Numerous AtriCure Insiders Sold Stock: Not A Positive Omen
A number of AtriCure, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATRC) insiders sold their shares in the last year, which may have raised concerns among investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At AtriCure
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Karen Prange, for US$233k worth of shares, at about US$38.12 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$31.73. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.
AtriCure insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

AtriCure Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of AtriCure shares. In total, Chief Scientific Officer Vinayak Doraiswamy sold US$84k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.
Does AtriCure Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. AtriCure insiders own about US$59m worth of shares. That equates to 3.6% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
What Might The Insider Transactions At AtriCure Tell Us?
An insider sold AtriCure shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We'd practice some caution before buying! Of course, the future is what matters most.
