AtriCure (NASDAQ:ATRC) pulls back 4.2% this week, but still delivers shareholders respectable 40% return over 1 year
Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the AtriCure, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATRC) share price is up 40% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 17% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 15% in three years.
While this past week has detracted from the company's one-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
Because AtriCure made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
In the last year AtriCure saw its revenue grow by 16%. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. While the share price performed well, gaining 40% over twelve months, you could argue the revenue growth warranted it. If revenue stays on trend, there may be plenty more share price gains to come. But it's crucial to check profitability and cash flow before forming a view on the future.

A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that AtriCure shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 40% over one year. That certainly beats the loss of about 3% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. If you would like to research AtriCure in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
