Teekay (NYSE:TK) ascends 9.3% this week, taking three-year gains to 184%
It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. To wit, the Teekay Corporation (NYSE:TK) share price has flown 184% in the last three years. That sort of return is as solid as granite. In more good news, the share price has risen 12% in thirty days.
Since the stock has added US$51m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Teekay became profitable within the last three years. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Teekay has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 87% in the last twelve months. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 0.3% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future.
