Slammed 25% Usio, Inc. (NASDAQ:USIO) Screens Well Here But There Might Be A Catch

The Usio, Inc. (NASDAQ:USIO) share price has softened a substantial 25% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. The recent drop has obliterated the annual return, with the share price now down 6.0% over that longer period.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Usio may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Diversified Financial industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.7x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Usio's Recent Performance Look Like?

Usio could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Usio's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Usio's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Usio would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Fortunately, a few good years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by 24% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 11% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 5.2%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Usio's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Usio's P/S

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Usio's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

A look at Usio's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.

Having said that, be aware Usio is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit concerning.

Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced. A business at three times leverage with nothing due until 2031 is in a completely different position from the same ratio rolling next year. Screen on weighted average maturity and the schedule behind it.
