Light & Wonder (NASDAQ:LNW) lifts 5.9% this week, taking five-year gains to 620%
Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. To wit, the Light & Wonder, Inc. (NASDAQ:LNW) share price has soared 620% over five years. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. Better yet, the share price has risen 5.9% in the last week. But this might be partly because the broader market had a good week last week, gaining 5.2%. Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.
On the back of a solid 7-day performance, let's check what role the company's fundamentals have played in driving long term shareholder returns.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the five years of share price growth, Light & Wonder moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. Indeed, the Light & Wonder share price has gained 45% in three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 323% each year. This EPS growth is higher than the 13% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. So you might conclude the market is a little more cautious about the stock, these days.

It is of course excellent to see how Light & Wonder has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on Light & Wonder's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
A Different Perspective
Investors in Light & Wonder had a tough year, with a total loss of 4.7%, against a market gain of about 11%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 48% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Light & Wonder (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
