It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So before you buy or sell Fiesta Restaurant Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:FRGI), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
What Is Insider Buying?
It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Fiesta Restaurant Group
CEO, President & Director Richard Stockinger made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$50k worth of shares at a price of US$15.25 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$9.45). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Richard Stockinger.
