Lead Real Estate Co., Ltd (NASDAQ:LRE) Stock's 28% Dive Might Signal An Opportunity But It Requires Some Scrutiny
The Lead Real Estate Co., Ltd (NASDAQ:LRE) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 28%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 72% share price decline.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Lead Real Estate may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 4.9x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 34x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
For example, consider that Lead Real Estate's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Lead Real Estate?
Lead Real Estate's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 4.2% decrease to the company's bottom line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 105% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 15% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we find it odd that Lead Real Estate is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Lead Real Estate's P/E
Lead Real Estate's P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Lead Real Estate currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
