Johnson Outdoors (NASDAQ:JOUT) adds US$43m to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from five years ago are still down 44%
It's nice to see the Johnson Outdoors Inc. (NASDAQ:JOUT) share price up 11% in a week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. In fact, the share price is down 51%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.
On a more encouraging note the company has added US$43m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.
Johnson Outdoors isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
In the last five years Johnson Outdoors saw its revenue shrink by 2.7% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. With neither profit nor revenue growth, the loss of 9% per year doesn't really surprise us. The chance of imminent investor enthusiasm for this stock seems slimmer than Louise Brooks. Ultimately, it may be worth watching - should revenue pick up, the share price might follow.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Johnson Outdoors, it has a TSR of -44% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Johnson Outdoors shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 29% over one year. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 8% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Johnson Outdoors better, we need to consider many other factors.
