He was employed at Brink's Incorporated. He serves as the Chairman of International Home Furnishings Center Inc. (IHFC). He served as Chairman of the Board of American Home Furnishings Alliance, Inc. He has been Chairman of Bassett Furniture Industries, Incorporated since March 2016 and has been its Director since 1997. He served as Lead Independent Director of Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. since August 2012 and served as its Director from August 2002 to 2014. He has been an Independent Director of Dominion Resources, Inc. since December 18, 2009 and serves as a Director at Dominion Energy Inc. He serves as a Director of American Home Furnishings Alliance. He serves on the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of New College Institute. Mr. Spilman holds a B.A. from Vanderbilt University.

The company engages in the design, manufacture, sourcing, distribution, and sale of furniture products to a network of company-owned and licensee-owned Bassett Home Furnishings retail stores, as well as independent furniture retailers; and wood and upholstery operations. As of January 17, 2019, it operated a network of 100 company- and licensee-owned stores. It also provides shipping, delivery, and warehousing services to customers in the furniture industry.
