Alight Insiders Sold US$44m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Many Alight, Inc. (NYSE:ALIT) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Alight Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, William Foley, sold US$41m worth of shares at a price of US$8.45 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$5.48. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.
In the last twelve months insiders purchased 175.31k shares for US$1.1m. But insiders sold 5.33m shares worth US$44m. All up, insiders sold more shares in Alight than they bought, over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Does Alight Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Alight insiders own about US$105m worth of shares (which is 3.6% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Alight Tell Us?
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. On the other hand the transaction history, over the last year, isn't so positive. Overall, we'd prefer see a more sustained buying from directors, but with a significant insider holding and more recent purchases, Alight insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future.
