Insiders At ACV Auctions Sold US$4.3m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
Over the past year, many ACV Auctions Inc. (NYSE:ACVA) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
ACV Auctions Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Brian Hirsch, for US$3.0m worth of shares, at about US$20.69 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$14.58. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

ACV Auctions Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of ACV Auctions shares. In total, Independent Director Eileen Kamerick dumped US$154k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.
Insider Ownership Of ACV Auctions
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that ACV Auctions insiders own 2.1% of the company, worth about US$52m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About ACV Auctions Insiders?
An insider hasn't bought ACV Auctions stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. So we'd only buy after careful consideration.
