ACCO Brands Insiders Miss 11% Gain After Offloading Stock
ACCO Brands Corporation's (NYSE:ACCO) stock rose 11% last week, but insiders who sold US$105k worth of stock over the last year are probably in a more advantageous position. Selling at an average price of US$5.47, which is higher than the current price, may have been the wisest decision for these insiders as their investment would have been worth less now than when they sold.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ACCO Brands
The Senior VP, Pamela Schneider, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$105k worth of shares at a price of US$5.47 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$3.99. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. Pamela Schneider was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Insiders At ACCO Brands Have Bought Stock Recently
Over the last three months, we've seen a bit of insider buying at ACCO Brands. President Thomas Tedford bought US$20k worth of shares in that time. It's good to see the insider buying, as well as the lack of recent sellers. But the amount invested in the last three months isn't enough for us too put much weight on it, as a single factor.
Does ACCO Brands Boast High Insider Ownership?
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. ACCO Brands insiders own about US$16m worth of shares. That equates to 4.3% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About ACCO Brands Insiders?
Insider purchases may have been minimal, in the last three months, but there was no selling at all. Overall the buying isn't worth writing home about. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by ACCO Brands insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company.
