Some Investors May Be Worried About V2X's (NYSE:VVX) Returns On Capital
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Having said that, from a first glance at V2X (NYSE:VVX) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on V2X is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.071 = US$159m ÷ (US$3.2b - US$996m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
Thus, V2X has an ROCE of 7.1%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Aerospace & Defense industry average of 9.8%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For V2X Tell Us?
The trend of ROCE doesn't look fantastic because it's fallen from 13% five years ago, while the business's capital employed increased by 471%. However, some of the increase in capital employed could be attributed to the recent capital raising that's been completed prior to their latest reporting period, so keep that in mind when looking at the ROCE decrease. The funds raised likely haven't been put to work yet so it's worth watching what happens in the future with V2X's earnings and if they change as a result from the capital raise.
The Bottom Line
Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by V2X's reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. Unsurprisingly, the stock has only gained 13% over the last five years, which potentially indicates that investors are accounting for this going forward. So if you're looking for a multi-bagger, the underlying trends indicate you may have better chances elsewhere.
Like most companies, V2X does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
