Virgin Galactic: Expect Some Short-Term Underperformance

Virgin Galactic has been through some tough few months ever since the company successfully launched founder Richard Branson into space. Volatility continued on Thursday as the company announced a one-month delay to commercial operations and postponement of a revenue-generating flight with the Italian Air Force. This was due to an 'enhancement' period for Virgin Galactic starting one month earlier than planned in light of recent lab tests. The announcement seriously undermined investors' confidence in the company to what is 'certain' or not, although it's nice that they're taking safety concerns as a top priority. With shares down 16.83% on Friday, and roughly 65.5% from July highs, could it be time to buy the dip?

Originally the only game in town, investors can now choose from a larger and ever-increasing number of space stocks. Below we explore whether Virgin Galactic is now a good investment opportunity or whether investors should look elsewhere for space exposure. We conclude that the stock is a Buy - but our logic is unusual so we urge you to read on before reaching your own conclusions!

Virgin Galactic: Not Your Best Space Tourism Play

There’s a risk that Virgin Galactic won’t be able to successfully kick off its commercial space tourism program on time next year. Constant delays, the inability to have room for error, and the lack of institutional backing are making Virgin Galactic an unattractive investment. We continue to believe that it’s better to avoid Virgin Galactic at this stage.
