SiteOne Landscape Supply (NYSE:SITE) Has A Pretty Healthy Balance Sheet

Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. Importantly, SiteOne Landscape Supply, Inc. (NYSE:SITE) does carry debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does SiteOne Landscape Supply Carry?

The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at March 2025 SiteOne Landscape Supply had debt of US$503.0m, up from US$448.0m in one year. However, it does have US$56.6m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$446.4m.

How Strong Is SiteOne Landscape Supply's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that SiteOne Landscape Supply had liabilities of US$740.8m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$947.4m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$56.6m and US$583.2m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$1.05b.

Of course, SiteOne Landscape Supply has a market capitalization of US$5.42b, so these liabilities are probably manageable. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward.

Check out our latest analysis for SiteOne Landscape Supply

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

While SiteOne Landscape Supply's low debt to EBITDA ratio of 1.3 suggests only modest use of debt, the fact that EBIT only covered the interest expense by 6.1 times last year does give us pause. So we'd recommend keeping a close eye on the impact financing costs are having on the business. But the bad news is that SiteOne Landscape Supply has seen its EBIT plunge 14% in the last twelve months. We think hat kind of performance, if repeated frequently, could well lead to difficulties for the stock. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine SiteOne Landscape Supply's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. So we clearly need to look at whether that EBIT is leading to corresponding free cash flow. During the last three years, SiteOne Landscape Supply generated free cash flow amounting to a very robust 90% of its EBIT, more than we'd expect. That puts it in a very strong position to pay down debt.

Our View

When it comes to the balance sheet, the standout positive for SiteOne Landscape Supply was the fact that it seems able to convert EBIT to free cash flow confidently. However, our other observations weren't so heartening. In particular, EBIT growth rate gives us cold feet. When we consider all the elements mentioned above, it seems to us that SiteOne Landscape Supply is managing its debt quite well. But a word of caution: we think debt levels are high enough to justify ongoing monitoring. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
