Have Insiders Been Buying Hubbell Incorporated (NYSE:HUBB) Shares?

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we’d be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Hubbell Incorporated (NYSE:HUBB).

What Is Insider Buying?

It’s quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, ‘insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.’

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Hubbell

Group President of Construction & Energy Rodd Ruland made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$210k worth of shares at a price of US$105 each. So it’s clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$125. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company’s future. While we always like to see insider buying, it’s less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. In this case we’re pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders bought 4994 shares for a total of US$518k. Hubbell may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn’t sell any. Does Hubbell Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it’s a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Hubbell insiders own about US$38m worth of shares. That equates to 0.6% of the company. We’ve certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
