Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By WF International Limited's (NASDAQ:WXM) 59% Share Price Surge
WF International Limited (NASDAQ:WXM) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 59% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.
After such a large jump in price, given around half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 18x, you may consider WF International as a stock to potentially avoid with its 23.1x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For instance, WF International's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?
WF International's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 36% decrease to the company's bottom line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 412% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we can see why WF International is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From WF International's P/E?
The large bounce in WF International's shares has lifted the company's P/E to a fairly high level. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that WF International maintains its high P/E on the strength of its recent three-year growth being higher than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
