Veritex Holdings' (NASDAQ:VBTX) five-year earnings growth trails the 10% YoY shareholder returns
It hasn't been the best quarter for Veritex Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:VBTX) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 14% in that time. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. Unfortunately its return of 39% is below the market return of 106%. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for five years, so spare a thought for those caught in the 30% decline over the last three years: that's a long time to wait for profits.
Since the stock has added US$92m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, Veritex Holdings achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 4.3% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 7% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Veritex Holdings the TSR over the last 5 years was 63%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Veritex Holdings has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 21% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 10% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
