We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in First Choice Bancorp (NASDAQ:FCBP).

What Is Insider Selling?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At First Choice Bancorp

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Chairman of the Board Peter Hui for US$201k worth of shares, at about US$18.14 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$31.56), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$1.1m for 65.92k shares. But they sold 22.20k shares for US$334k. Overall, First Choice Bancorp insiders were net buyers during the last year. Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership.
