We'd be surprised if Capital Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:CBNK) shareholders haven't noticed that the Independent Director, Stephen Ashman, recently sold US$188k worth of stock at US$23.93 per share. However, the silver lining is that the sale only reduced their total holding by 1.6%, so we're hesitant to read anything much into it, on its own.

Capital Bancorp Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Independent Director Stephen Ashman was not the only time they sold Capital Bancorp shares this year. Earlier in the year, they fetched US$18.88 per share in a -US$883k sale. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$23.50). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 7.1%of Stephen Ashman's holding.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Capital Bancorp insiders own 41% of the company, worth about US$133m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
