Have Popular Insiders Been Selling Stock?
We wouldn't blame Popular, Inc. (NASDAQ:BPOP) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Gilberto Monzon, a company insider, recently netted about US$2.2m selling shares at an average price of US$124. That sale reduced their total holding by 42% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Popular
In fact, the recent sale by Gilberto Monzon was the biggest sale of Popular shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at below the current price (US$125). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 42% of Gilberto Monzon's holding.

Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Popular insiders own 2.2% of the company, currently worth about US$190m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Popular Insiders?
An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But since Popular is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Popular.
