Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Patrick Industries (NASDAQ:PATK), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Patrick Industries Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Impressively, Patrick Industries has grown EPS by 20% per year, compound, in the last three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Patrick Industries shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 6.5% to 8.6%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Patrick Industries Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Patrick Industries shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$103m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Should You Add Patrick Industries To Your Watchlist?

You can't deny that Patrick Industries has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 3 warning signs for Patrick Industries (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of.
