The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Anli International Co., Ltd. (GTSM:5223) share price is up 86% in the last year, clearly besting the market return of around 12% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. We'll need to follow Anli International for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Anli International was able to grow EPS by 24% in the last twelve months. The share price gain of 86% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Anli International's TSR for the last year was 90%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Anli International shareholders have gained 90% over the last year, including dividends. The more recent returns haven't been as impressive as the longer term returns, coming in at just 13%. Having said that, we doubt shareholders would be concerned. It seems the market is simply waiting on more information, because if the business delivers so will the share price (eventually).
