We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in First Real Estate Investment Trust (SGX:AW9U).
What Is Insider Selling?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At First Real Estate Investment Trust
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director of Bowsprit Capital Corporation Limited Martin Lechner bought S$1m worth of shares at a price of S$0.20 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of S$0.24. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. Happily, the First Real Estate Investment Trust insider decided to buy shares at close to current prices. Martin Lechner was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.
