Riverstone Holdings (SGX:AP4) delivers shareholders 1.1% CAGR over 5 years, surging 6.7% in the last week alone
For many, the main point of investing is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But in any portfolio, there will be mixed results between individual stocks. At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in Riverstone Holdings Limited (SGX:AP4), since the last five years saw the share price fall 40%. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 25% in the last 90 days.
The recent uptick of 6.7% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Riverstone Holdings' TSR for the last 5 years was 5.8%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Riverstone Holdings shareholders are down 17% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 23%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.1% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Riverstone Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Riverstone Holdings , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
